Student Activities
Campus Tours
A general campus tour will take place on the first day of the internship and will include visits to departments of host PIs’, service and recreational facilities, libraries, etc. Additional tours during the internship will include campus museums and science centers.
Field Trips
Students will participate in a one-day field trip that will include one of the following non-campus UA venues:
- Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum: 98 acre facility that comprises a zoo, botanical garden, art gallery, natural history museum, and aquarium of the Sonoran southwest
- Biosphere 2: Unique experimental center that houses seven model ecosystems for research, education, and public outreach
- Mt. Lemmon Sky Center: Interdisciplinary scientific exploration center dedicated to Arizona’s Sky Islands research and outreach
- Santa Rita Range Experimental Station: Outdoor laboratory for research related to sustainable grazing practices
Training Seminars and Workshops
Students will be required to attend a series of seminars and workshops during their internship. Topics will include:
- General laboratory safety
- Science communication skills
- Ethics in science
- Large data management
- STEM careers and graduate majors
Internship Presentations
Students will present their research findings in a formal REU symposium at the end of their internship. The presentations will be comprised of a research poster or an oral presentation.
