About the Food Safety and Microbiology Emphasis

In the Food Safety and Microbiology emphasis, you will learn how to protect our food supply from microbes and pathogens that affect public health and food quality, highlighting the important role of microbes in food spoilage and food preservation. Students in this program can participate in hands-on laboratory classes, research, internships and career preparation, including food safety professional certifications.

This emphasis will prepare you for food safety careers in academia, the government, or in food industry roles like food safety specialist, microbiology lab technician, quality assurance or control analyst. This program can also prepare you for graduate/professional school.
